The Irish girl entered the stallion barn. She had already ridden Vinny, but didn't have the energy to ride Jack. He required your full attention, and Keelin didn't have quite enough right then. But he really needed to get exercised, so Keelin slipped his leather halter on and clipped the chain under his nose to the other side. "Let's go, buddy," she told the jet black stallion. They would have a free longing session that day. So after tieing him up, Keelin brushed his sleek coat and looked for any scratches or cuts. She didn't find anything, so then she picked his hooves out.
When the hyper stallion was all groomed, they continued their walk to the outdoor round pen. Keelin had a light blue sweater-shirt on with a white camisole under it. Though it was early spring, the temperatures were already rising. Today it was cool enough though at a comfortable 63. Jack tossed his head as he was let loose in the large round pen. Keelin had kept his halter on, knowing it would be a game trying to catch him later if she had taken it off. The Thoroughbred took off at a trot around the perimter of the pen.
Keelin kept him on the wall, using a long, lime green longe whip to guide him. He snorted and lowered his head once and a while, but didn't buck. He only bucked at a canter. The girl smiled, as she could see he wanted to very much. "All right, canter," she said. At the sound of the word, Jack leapt into a canter. It turned out to be closer to a gallop, though. "Easy boy," Keelin said with a laugh as her stallion threw a buck or two into his pace. Once he had calmed down to a regular canter, Keelin spoke again. "Walk now," she said, and after one more stride of cantering Jack obeyed and took a walk around the ring. He got off the rail a little bit, so Keelin flicked the whip at his stomach, and he jumped a little bit, but walked back to the rail. "Good boy," she praised.
After a little bit of walking, Keelin asked Jack to reverse. She stepped out onto the rail and flicked the whip between Jack and the side of the pen. At first he just tossed his head and kept going, but Keelin flicked the whip again and said "reverse", and he made a tight tear drop to go the other way. "Good, now trot," Keelin said and resumed her place in the center, switching hands with the whip. Jack did right away, lowering his head and swinging it around. The girl laughed quietly and waited for him to stop this before asking for a halt. Like she expected, he took a couple steps before becoming immobile. "Good," she said, and then flicked the whip at his haunches. Jack flew into a canter like Keelin wanted, and took a couple laps around the pen before he was asked to slow to a walk.
"That's my boy," Keelin said as she put the whip away and caught the black stallion. He snorted as she fed him three treats. While he ate, Keelin slipped the chain under his nose and led him back to the barn. She gave him a pat and a kiss on the nose before she headed up to the house to have lunch.
